Janessa Smit | Legislative Director

Janessa Smit is an accomplished strategist, policy advisor and government affairs professional with over twenty years of experience shaping public policy, leading economic development initiatives, and guiding organizational growth across West Michigan. Her background includes key leadership roles at the Grand Rapids and Muskegon Lakeshore Chambers of Commerce, where she advanced bipartisan advocacy, built coalitions, and influenced issue-specific legislation in areas of education, workforce development, natural resources, manufacturing, infrastructure, and business development at the local, state and federal levels of government.

In her executive roles with the Allendale Area Chamber of Commerce and Hudsonville Education Foundation, Janessa led major fundraising efforts, elevated organization profiles, and advised boards on strategic planning and governance. She is recognized for her ability to align public and private sector goals, facilitate complex stakeholder engagement, and deliver results that strengthen both businesses and communities.

From 2016 – 2018, Janessa served as Chairwoman of the Ottawa County Republican Party, where she led strategic initiatives to strengthen precinct delegate training, increase voter engagement, recruit strong candidates, and effectively communicate the party platform—contributing to successful campaigns and mid-term election wins.

Janessa holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Grand Valley State University and has completed extensive professional development in nonprofit leadership, organizational management, and civic engagement. At Acuitas, she provides high-impact counsel in legislative strategy, public affairs, and stakeholder communications.

Janessa and her husband Tim reside in Hudsonville with their two amazing teenage daughters and the family dog. She loves being a mom, boating, sitting on the beach, unsweet iced tea, live music,  houseplants and working out.
