How to sustainably manage Michigan’s over 20 million acres of forestlands, improve water quality protection, and other society benefits.
Approach
Worked with forest landowners, loggers, wood consuming mills, legislators and state agencies to promote effective state best management practices through forest certification programs. Moreover, identified leaders in the legislature, state administration and other stakeholders to fund water quality protection work.
Results
After delivering on a solution with included state appropriations, industry officials and independent universities, the long-term sustainability of Michigan forests is greatly enhanced. Proven results include 95% statewide implementation of best management practices to protect water, soils, wildlife, threatened and endangered species, and forests of recognized importance.
